SUMMARY:10th Dec: World Human Rights (Equality and Social Justice) Day
DESCRIPTION:Part of an ONLINE series of lectures to mark World Awareness Days\, we are pleased to invite you to mark Human Rights Day.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nChaired by Professor Julia J.A. Shaw\, Professor of Law & Justice\, Director of the Centre for Law\, Justice and Society (CLJS)\, Leicester De Montfort Law School \nTo mark World Human Rights Day\, scholars from across De Montfort University will discuss the relevance and importance of their research to the twin themes of equality and social justice in 15-minute presentations followed by a 30-minute Q&A session. \nTo begin\, the first theme will discuss three movements of artistic and popular culture from different parts of Africa which were part of social struggles for equality and social justice during different historical periods. For the second presentation\, the focus shifts to Leicester and addresses the role of two third sector employability projects and considers the constraints within which they operate; asking whether they can support service users to make their own choices and exercise control over their employability journey by offering a better alternative to mainstream ‘activation’ policies. \nThe third topic investigates the extent to which the current approach to human rights enforcement is too concerned with identifying and punishing a small minority of perpetrators. Accordingly\, this presentation considers whether the ‘criminalisation’ of human rights abuses and search for scapegoats is at the expense of the identification of the truth of systemic failings and genuine recognition and protection of human rights for all. \nFinally\, everyone loves chocolate; however it can be difficult for ethical consumers to know what type of chocolate to buy\, especially given the different types of certification (Fairtrade\, Rainforest Alliance\, organic\, etc.) and news stories about slavery\, child labour\, deforestation and farmer poverty. This paper explores some of these concerns and the practical ways in which consumers can make more informed ethical choices. \n\n• Performing Arts\, Equality and Social Justice: perspectives from the African Continent\, Dr Funmi Adewole\, Senior Lecturer in Dance\, School of Humanities and Performing Arts\n• The Role of the Third-Sector in Delivering Employability Support for Vulnerable Adults and Young People: lessons from local projects within Leicester\, Professor Jonathan Payne\, Professor of Work\, Employment & Skills\, Director of the People\, Organisations and Work Institute (POWI)\, Leicester Castle Business School & Dr Peter Butler-Pogorzelczyk\, Senior Lecturer in Employment Relations\, Leicester Castle Business School\n• Human Rights – Rhetoric or Reality?: the role of responsibility\, accountability and truth\, Tim Hillier\, Head of Leicester De Montfort Law School\n• Social Justice and Equality in Cocoa: what every ethical chocolate lover needs to know\, Dr Amanda Berlan\, Reader in Business & Sustainability\, Leicester Castle Business School\n\nBookings will close 1 hour prior to the start of the event\, and registrants will receive a link to join the online event 24hrs before the event\, via their provided email address. \nPlease contact the DMU Events Office on eventsoffice@dmu.ac.uk if you have any questions. \nThis event is open to all. \n\n\n\n\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Share on Pocket (Opens in new window)\n Pocket\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit

SUMMARY:10th Nov: Systems Thinking and the Climate Crisis
DESCRIPTION:A 2-hour interactive workshop exploring Systems Thinking\, how this relates to climate change and how insights from engaging with complex issues systemically can be applied to any field. \nIntended for: DMU Staff \nRegistration: via DMUHub Staff Development bookings \nFull Description: Climate change can no longer be ignored – it will soon impact every corner of our lives\, and there won’t be simple answers to deal with it. The present state of the climate has been shaped by population\, history\, culture\, policy\, power\, biology\, geochemistry\, and economics\, which have all influenced each other. Exponential growth\, tipping points\, leverage points\, side effects\, and synergies all influence the effectiveness of any response to climate we might consider implementing. Climate change occurs in our interconnected world. \nWe can’t change this complexity – it’s part of what makes our lives and our planet beautiful and interesting – yet we can work with it. And that’s what systems thinking is all about. \nThis 2-hour staff workshop will introduce key systems thinking tools that will help make sense of complex issues in a way that you will be able to apply in your own field. You will also be given time for a reflective dialogue in which you can explore the interconnections within the systems of which you are a part. \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Share on Pocket (Opens in new window)\n Pocket\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit

SUMMARY:22nd Nov: Real-life Learning and Community Benefit
DESCRIPTION:This workshop session organised by DMU’s Centre for Academic Innovation (CAI) is one of a series exploring the concept of Real-Life Learning\, which aims to make stronger links between real-world impacts and student learning whilst addressing societal challenges such as the sustainable development agenda. \nReal-life learning and community benefit: Strategies for achieving impact and learning for all \nLed by Dr Andrew Reeves\, Senior Lecturer\, Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development \nThis interactive session explores how a fully integrated real-life learning approach can be employed through taught courses\, linking teaching\, research and real-world impact\, taking the DMU Masters module ‘Leading Change for Sustainability’ as a case study. \nAttendees will learn about the pros and cons of a variety of innovative approaches of making student learning and community benefit two sides of the same coin. These include using problem briefs from DMU colleagues or the local community; running timetabled classes as public events; running public events to showcase key concepts taught on the course; and integrating research projects into the course. \nParticipants will have a chance to discuss with others if and how this approach could apply to their own practice\, and will be encouraged to try out a ‘Living Lab’ toolkit to further explore opportunities in this area. \nSign up for the session here.
