In light of the recent increase in public, media and Governmental engagement with the urgent need to act on climate change, we have decided to join the conversation. Here at DMU we actively engage with sustainability issues, and via our commitment to address the UN Sustainable Developmetn Goals (including #SDG13, Climate Action) they hold a firm position within the ethos of the university. So, how should DMU respond to this increase in exposure for climate change?
A Climate Emergency has been declared by the likes of Leicester City Council, Newcastle University and Bristol University and the UK government. Declaring a Climate Emergency means that you are acknowledging the emergency situation, you want to raise awareness for climate change issues and you want make changes that positively affect the climate.
- Should DMU join these institutions in declaring a Climate Emergency?
- Should DMU be working towards a target of net-zero emissions?
- What would DMU look like if it had an unsurpassed commitment to act on climate change?
All of these questions and more will be open to discussion at the ‘DMU and the Climate Emergency’ event.
Location: Campus Centre Atrium (ground floor, front of building), Thursday 30th May 2019, 11am-1pm.
We would like to invite staff and students at DMU to come along to the event and share their ideas on the topic of climate emergency and DMU.
Following a brief introduction to DMU’s current work to reduce its own carbon footprint and the current policy context, attendees will have the chance to share their own thoughts and ideas for action through small-group and plenary discussions. So, join us and become a part of this all important conversation!
Please register in advance if you would like to attend.
To register your attendance, tell us your dietary requirements and share your thoughts on this topic, please complete a short survey, here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NGTXKSH. The survey also gives you space to highlight what you would like you discuss at the event or to share your thoughts if you cannot attend – we will make initial plans for discussions accordingly.
We can also offer a free tub of ice cream (dairy or vegan) for any students who come along.
